Old Sayings
When my friend’s husband was having surgery one day and we
were just sitting around for hours in the waiting room, someone came up with
the idea to write down as many old sayings as we could think of. We took turns with all of the people who were
there waiting with us, and we came up with one old saying after another! Some of them were so funny….and we sometimes
would stop and say, “What in the world does that mean?”, or “where do you think
that old saying came from?” It really
helped to pass the time.
I mean, have you ever heard some of these?
There’s no flies on sister!
It’s no sweat off my back.
Good honk!
Well I’ll swan.
Shoot fire and save matches.
It takes one to know one.
I’m slap happy.
I’m sitting pretty.
It is so much fun in a group of people to just sit and think
of these kinds of expressions that we all heard when we were growing up. And it seems there is just no end to
them. They make you laugh, and they also
make you “scratch your head!” (There’s
another one!)
Here are some more:
You ain’t just a whistling Dixie.
Come hell or high water.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Better safe than sorry.
Don’t cry over spilled milk.
Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
A stitch in time saves nine.
Better safe than sorry.
Don’t put your cart before the horse.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
You’ll be up a creek without a paddle.
Don’t get up on the wrong side of the bed.
Right as rain.
The early bird gets the worm.
Step on a crack and you’ll break your mother’s back.
Pretty is as pretty does.
A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.
Take it like a man.
Buck up skippy.
Isn’t this fun? I
could sit here all morning and not run out of sayings.
My mother grew up in Texas,
and she sure had a million sayings and expressions like this. One of them she always said when we kids did
something wrong was, “I’m gonna tan your hide!”
That sounds Texan doesn’t it?
(smile) Oh how I miss my sweet
momma and all of her sayings. What were
some that you heard when you were growing up?
I wonder if people still use a lot of these…or maybe they are dying
out? I don’t know…maybe this current
generation has some of their own that will stick around, and their kids will be
learning them to pass on to their kids!
Let me think of some more:
That’s a hard pill to swallow.
You’ve bitten off more than you can chew.
Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy,
and wise!
You can get more flies with sugar than you can with vinegar!
Never under estimate the power of a woman.
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
Never on Sunday.
Someday never comes.
Cross my fingers hope to die.
We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Oil and water don’t mix.
Marry in haste, repent in leisure!
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Liar, liar, pants on fire!
I’ve got ants in my pants!
You look like death warmed over!
You’re over the hill.
Under the weather.
You eat like a bird.
You’re so thin you could blow away.
I haven’t seen you in a month of Sundays.
As the crow flies.
Let’s sleep on it.
Like a drop in the bucket.
Waste not, want not.
For crying out loud.
It was like taking candy from a baby.
I’m gonna crack the whip.
You’re itching for a fight.
We’ll as you can see, it is hard to stop once you
start. (You see, that was another one!)
You should try this at your next party or family
gathering. Everyone will like it…and it
will “knock their socks off!”
